Trump and Netanyahu's Divergent Paths: Iran Pressure vs. War Agenda (2026)

A dangerous game is unfolding on the global stage, with the leaders of the United States and Israel seemingly aligned in their tactics but divided on their ultimate goals. The stakes are high, and the potential consequences could reshape the Middle East forever.

President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have embraced a strategy of "maximum pressure" against Iran, targeting its oil exports to China. This aggressive move, backed by Trump's executive order imposing tariffs on nations trading with Iran, has the potential to cripple Iran's economy.

But here's where it gets controversial: while the tactics are in sync, the endgame is not. Trump, it seems, is open to a deal, whereas Netanyahu is pushing for an all-out war with Iran.

Netanyahu's stance, according to analysts, is a calculated move to drag the US into a direct conflict with Tehran. Despite the hawkish posturing, the Trump administration has kept diplomatic channels open, with indirect negotiations taking place between Washington and Tehran.

The US proposal, as reported, includes a temporary suspension of uranium enrichment and the removal of highly enriched uranium from Iran. However, Netanyahu is aiming higher, demanding conditions that Tehran is unlikely to accept, such as curbing its ballistic missile program and severing ties with regional allies.

An expert on Israeli affairs, Mohannad Mustafa, believes this is a deliberate strategy to ensure diplomacy fails. "Israel knows Iran won't accept these terms. By setting them, Israel is saying its only option is war."

And this is the part most people miss: while the world's attention is focused on the potential Iran conflict, Israel is quietly pushing forward with its annexation policies in the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip. Palestinian leaders warn that Israel is using the regional tensions as a smokescreen to irreversibly alter the reality on the ground.

Mustafa Barghouti, general secretary of the Palestinian National Initiative, highlights how the focus on Iran serves as a distraction from Israel's accelerating annexation policies. The Israeli cabinet has approved measures to seize Palestinian lands for illegal settlements, a move that threatens the viability of a sovereign Palestinian state.

"The picture is clear," Barghouti says. "Israel wants sole power in the Middle East. They're using the Iranian threat pretext to finish off the Oslo Accords, taking away even the PA's powers in Area A."

The renewed focus on Iran's nuclear capabilities has also brought attention to Western double standards regarding Israel's undeclared nuclear arsenal. Israel possesses 200 nuclear warheads, yet the narrative persists that it faces an existential threat from Iran.

"The existential threat is faced by the Palestinian people, who are being liquidated," Barghouti adds.

The US stance, defended by Professor Paul Davis, argues that Iran's enrichment to 60% signals aggressive intent, unlike Israel's long-standing possession of nuclear weapons without use. However, Mustafa concludes that Israel's approach indicates a rejection of diplomacy and a desire to reshape the Middle East by force.

"Israel wants to topple the Iranian regime, regardless of cost, to change the region's face," Mustafa says.
