Adelaide's Bold Move: MotoGP's Street Race Revolution (2026)

Bold claim: Adelaide is aiming to host MotoGP’s first-ever true street race, a move that would redefine how the world championship visits Australia. And this is where it gets controversial: the proposal comes as Victoria rejected MotoGP Sports Entertainment’s idea to relocate the Australian Grand Prix from Phillip Island to Melbourne’s Albert Park, even as funding to upgrade Phillip Island was promised.

Here’s the situation in plain terms. Victoria’s government, under Jacinta Allan, said no to the alternative venue switch and instead pledged money to improve Phillip Island, whose contract with the MotoGP promoter runs through 2026. Despite those assurances, it appears the promoter’s leadership isn’t convinced, and October’s MotoGP event at Phillip Island is increasingly seen as the final one at that iconic seaside circuit, about 140 kilometers from Melbourne.

Meanwhile, South Australia has reportedly presented MotoGP Sports Entertainment with a highly compelling bid to create what would be the sport’s first genuine street circuit. The plan envisions a circuit right in the heart of the state, a bold departure from traditional street-into-track concepts. By contrast, the Mandalika track in Lombok has already shown that what some call a street circuit can blur lines with permanent facilities.

Carlos Ezpeleta, MotoGP’s sporting director and a senior figure within the organization, flew from Barcelona to Adelaide last Tuesday. An official announcement on the bid could come within hours, signaling a decisive shift in where the world championship’s marquee event might land next.

South Australia’s push emphasizes the region’s appetite for a major international event and appears more expansive than the Victoria proposal. If Adelaide and MotoGP reach a deal, the new arrangement would likely commence in 2027, following the completion of necessary construction work.

Context: Adelaide previously hosted the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix from 1985 to 1995, highlighting the city’s experience with large-scale international motorsport.
