St. Frances Xavier Cabrini, Italy
St. Frances Xavier Cabrini was born at Sant' Angelo Lodigiano, in Lombardy, northern Italy on July 15, 1850. At the age of 18 she received her teacher's license and taught for a few years. She did charitable work in an orphanage, the House of Providence, and there joined the Sisters of Providence. When the hospital closed and the sisters disbanded, Frances thought of doing missionary work in a foreign country. During a meeting with Pope Leo XIII, she told him she was unable to find a congregation of sisters who were missionaries. To this the Pope replied: “Found your own group!” In 1880, with several companions from the House of Providence, she established the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart.
